JJ House
We have completed the refurbishment and extension of a Grade II listed building in East London. The extensions consist of a frame-less glass box which is sunken below ground level containing the dining area against a vertical garden and a mansard roof extension which provides space for an additional master bedroom including an en-suite bathroom. The latter is open-able towards the bedroom via a wooden sliding screen.
Existing external vaults have been converted into an herb garden and a wine storage. The existing cold floor build up has been replaced with underpinning, an insulated build up, an under-floor heating and is finished with large concrete tiles. The non-compliant main staircase has been addressed by utilizing fire glazing. The existing first floor bathroom has received an internal high-performance insulated lining and a complete overhaul in order to be thermally sound and modern wet room experience.
A rich but sophisticated material palette complements existing modernist furniture masterpieces: Clay render, exposed brickwork, fair-faced concrete, exposed steel structure, matt white mosaic tiles, interwoven metallic rubber, copper ironmongery, tinted glass, bronzed mirrors and hardwood sit comfortably next to Charles Eames, Poul Henningsen, Dieter Rams and other pieces. A new fire place provides extra comfort to the lower ground floor.
